How do I fix this issue?

I can't rip any CD's without this happening.

Error: Error reading CD: medium error: L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR

Thank you

I'm sorry to hear that @Ded2Me. It looks like somehow CUETools is having trouble with your CD-ROM drive. I've never seen that before, but I guess that can happen. I'm finding info on it either being a glitch with CUETools, or just some sort of incompatibility, or both.

If you have another CD-ROM drive, that's worth a shot. You can pick up a USB one for really cheap these days. Let me know if you happened to purchase the premium version for this, and I'll make sure to get you a refund.

By the way, what model of CD drive do you have?

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am able to begin ripping. and it seems to work just fine but about 3/4 of the way thru it just stops and gives me this error. Other ripping software seems to work just fine. I am using an ASUS DvD RW drive.

ASUS DRW-24B1ST j  is what Windows says the Model of this drive is.

I did purchase the software but I don;t necessarily want a refund because I believe this could be fixed. Like I said, other software works just fine when I rip.

One thing I did notice is that the drive seems to want to rip it in MAX speed. Even though I turn it down in settings, it starts out slow but ends up screaming fast once again. Not sure if that is causing it or not. It seems to work fine until about half way to 3/4 of the way thru the process, then this error comes up.

Thanks for any help

I have the same issue @Ded2Me@Jason Carr.  I have an Asus ROG laptop but not sure on the brand of CD/DVD Rom drive (see drive info) but this is the error I'm getting...

Thanks guys for the reports and the patience, I do appreciate it. @Ded2Me I do think you're right that it can be fixed. For whatever reason whoever initially coded the command-line version of CueRipper seemed to make it halt and quit even on errors that shouldn't kill the entire rip (though, I'm not certain that a rip could end up actually being accurate after these errors occur). I'll look at the CUETools code to see if there's anything I can do to make it a bit more robust. I've already tweaked a number of things in the console ripper code, so I don't think it'll be too far out of my comfort zone, but we'll see.

Regardless, I do know that when you're ripping CDs, there are drives that are good for it, and drives that aren't. I'm not certain if the drives that are reporting these errors would really be good for accurately ripping CDs, but I've never really owned a CD drive that didn't work well with CUERipper, so I don't really know. If you are planning on ripping a significant CD collection, it might be worth picking up a $30 external USB CD drive, though I wish I knew what drives are well supported and what drives aren't lol.

Yes @Jason Carr there are better CD drives better at ripping than others, for sure.  I had a USB CD/DVD drive laying around and I connected it and tried to rip the same CD.  Here are the results...

Perfect rip completed and confirmed for "The Cranberries - [1994] No Need to Argue - Disc 1 of 2"!
All tracks were accurately ripped with confidence 200.

Looks like it was a success.  I believe CUERipper works better with some drives than others.  FWIW, my initial internal CD/DVD drive in my ASUS ROG laptop rips fine in FreeRip Basic.

Glad you have a drive that works @xman. I don't know much about FreeRip Basic, but in my opinion unless it supports AccurateRip, it's honestly not worth using. So even if CueTools has issues with some drives, I'd say it's still worth it due to the features. I still plan to look to see if I can improve it though.

Not sure if it supports AccurateRip.  I'll be testing Music Box Alpha and watching how it progresses.  If LaunchBox/BigBox is any indication, I'm sure MusicBoxAlpha will turn out great!  Thanks for all the hard work in your products and listening to your community.

Jason. I am all about supporting your work. I love Launchbox and I am a lifetime license holder.  (Disclaimer, I did win this in a contest but planned on buying the software anyway)

I usually use CDex (https://cdex.mu/) to rip my discs. But your software is an all in one suite that I think MANY people are asking for. (Artwork, polaylists etc...)

It has always worked great for me (I admit I am not a FLAC guy, but I enjoy my high bitrate mp3s) I would like to go FLAC eventually. And I think your software can eventually provide this.

Why would this software (CDex) work without a hitch on my drive that does not work well with your software?

I realize this software is in alpha stage, but there is NOTHING wrong with my drive. It works perfectly. I don't see how spending 30-40 bucks on an external drive is going to solve my issue when I have working equipment.

Thanks for all your hard work. Hopefully you can get this sorted out eventually. I will not be asking for a refund because I believe in your talents and abilities. Like I said, You make great stuff. I will be watching closely to see if this bug gets resolved.

I will stand corrected. It seems that my drive is acting strangely. I will buy a external to see if I have better results. This is so odd. Anyway, Thank you Jason.

No problem @Ded2Me. Keep in mind that I am aware that CUETools has some compatibility issues with some drives, and I *do* plan on looking at it.

FWIW @Jason Carr, I started to look into free CD Ripping programs that support AccurateRip and lossy and lossless compression and came across Exact Audio Copy (EAC). Although it's free for personal use, they do have a commercial SDK.  The nice thing is that it works with my internal CD/DVD drive that I had issues with CUETools.

Yeah, Exact Audio Copy is really the only other product (other than CUETools) that provides accurate rips. It's been a while since I've used it; the only problem with it is less support for proper FLAC CD images (though they may have added better support for that recently). Regardless, I haven't attempted it yet but I still think I can make some headway on that issue with CUETools.

@Jason Carr  Hello. I just hooked up a new external drive to my PC and I can not rip any CD's. I am now getting THIS error when attempting to do so.

Sadly no, but I will look into it. What are the make and models of both of your drives?

@Jason Carr

The one i bought from Amazon is;

Rioddas External CD Drive, USB 3.0 Portable CD/DVD +/-RW Drive Slim DVD/CD ROM Rewriter Burner Compatible with Laptop Desktop PC Windows Linux OS Apple Mac(Black)

it works great using other popular CD ripping software. Even ones using  the same back end as yours (exact audio copy. EAC). I did determine that my old drive is faulty which is why I bought this one.

if you got any idea as to what the problem is that would be cool. Thanks Jason.

  • 5 months later...

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but if anyone else is having this issue, change your CD Audio setting (Pure Read) to Master mode and you should be able to rip CDs with your drive. You can change this with your drive's manufacturer tool. I'm using an external Pioneer Bluray drive.

Also, double check your Destination Folder settings in MBA (Settings -> CD Ripping -> Destination Folder). You have to specify a folder here and you may have had this setting cleared when you updated (I did and am not sure which update it was).

I was so happy when my disc I was testing finally spit out that perfect rip. Have fun guys!
